IS MUSIC IN THE WORKPLACE PROFESSIONAL OR UNPROFESSIONAL?

Music in the workplace. This is an interesting and diplomatic topic. There are varying decisions and arguments on this topic, they are divided along the professionalism and taste of the music line. I would like to use my experience and workplace as an example.

In my workplace, there is no definite decision on music, my colleagues play music through their headset or play it on low volume. So far it doesn’t affect our productivity.

SURVEY ON MUSIC IN THE WORKPLACE

Interestingly, I came across a survey carried out by Webfx, it was centered on the impact of music on the productivity of employees in the workplace, and how business owners feel. Kindly go through the statistics below.

·       61% of employees listen to music in the workplace.

·       90% of workers perform better when listening to music.

·       77% of small and medium business owners believe music increases employee morale.

·       40% of businesses believe playing music increases sales.

·       Ambient music improves the accuracy of data entry in 92% of people.

·       If your work requires DEEP FOCUS, it’s best to listen to familiar songs.

However, from the survey I carried out in my workplace revealed that 73% of my colleagues dislike metal genre of music.

THE MUSIC IN THE WORKPLACE ITSELF

Different strokes for different folks, I got talking with one of my senior colleagues in the accounts department, I asked him why we don’t have a policy on music in the workplace, he said and I quote, “what kind of music are they (management) going to approve? And won’t the music affect the work rate?”

This got me thinking if the management would officially agree on playing music, what genre of music would be allowed, and will it affect productivity?

I’d suggest, a survey should be carried by each organization on music in the workplace, this would help drive the decisions on the different areas of interest. If three-quarters of the employees want it, the management can go for it. However, there are some that still believe it is a distraction.

We should also know, the management doesn’t care about the genre of music you listen to.

THE WORKPLACE ITSELF

Workplaces differ, and music won’t be welcome or acceptable in some, but for others, the advantages seem clear: music can boost productivity and creativity.
